COLD SPRING, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A popular hiking destination for New Yorkers will no longer be accessible via the MTA's Metro-North line.
The Breakneck Ridge Metro-North Station will be closed for two years for construction starting April 21, the MTA announced Monday morning.
In addition to the station closing, the Breakneck Ridge and Wilkinson Memorial trailheads will close on April 21. The trailheads off of NY-9D will be closed until further notice, and parking in the area north of the tunnel will be prohibited.
During the closures, Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail Inc. will complete construction of the Fjord Trail's Breakneck Connection and Bridge, providing hikers a safer alternative to walking along State Route 9D to access the trailheads.
The HHFT will replace low platforms at the station with higher ones and create a pedestrian and bicycle path connecting the outbound platform to the Breakneck Ridge trailhead.
“When this project is completed, Metro-North riders will once again have direct access to one of New York’s most popular hiking destinations and safer passage to Hudson Highlands State Park,” said Metro-North Railroad President Justin Vonashek. “And the renovated and upgraded Breakneck Ridge station will make it more attractive than ever to take the train to the trails.”
