Men attack ambulance driver carrying infant for emergency treatment

A private ambulance driver was attacked by some people in Bengaluru on Sunday night. The ambulance, en route to Vani Vilas Hospital in Bengaluru from a private hospital in Tumakuru, was transporting a critically ill five-month-old baby on oxygen.

The attack happened near Nelamangala toll plaza.

The incident happened when four men in a car, allegedly intoxicated, started chasing the ambulance. They were enraged by the ambulance's speed and pursued it for five to six kilometres before intercepting it at the toll plaza.

Despite the urgent medical situation, the assailants showed no mercy.

John, the ambulance driver, was allegedly assaulted by the group right in front of police officers stationed at the toll plaza.

A video of the incident shows a few men attacking the driver through the car window, while simultaneously asking him to step out of the vehicle.

The attackers ignored the pleas of the child's parents, who begged with folded hands for the ambulance to be allowed to continue.

The ambulance driver later alleged that the assailants were clearly under the influence of alcohol during the attack.

The police intervened promptly, restraining the attackers and ensuring the ambulance could resume its journey to the hospital.

Mallikarjun Baldandi, Bengaluru Rural SP, said, "An ambulance driver was driving his vehicle fast and overtook an Innova car. The people in the Innova opposed him overtaking the vehicle. Near the Nelamangala toll, people in Innova took over the ambulance and assaulted the driver. We have registered an FIR and are investigating further. We will find in inquiry if they were inebriated state when they were driving the vehicle."
