NEW YORK (PIX11) – Monday is the first day of the new fiscal year for New York City and the ink is still drying on the record-breaking $112.4 billion budget deal signed by the City Council.

"It's about sitting down in a room with real intentions for New Yorkers, and that's what we did," Mayor Eric Adams told PIX11 News.

Lawmakers were able to restore $1 billion in planned cuts for schools, libraries and other cultural institutions.

"We took small decisions at the beginning of this administration that allows us to have over $8 billion in reserves during difficult times," Adams said about restoring parts of the budget. "There was a lot of inefficiencies in our agencies… we had an over $7 billion budget gap that we had to close."

Adams revealed that the migrant crisis cost the city $4.9 billion, and it's not going away anytime soon.

"That's $4.9 billion that could've gone to other services," Adams said.

Almost 5,000 migrants a month are coming into the city, according to Adams. The city is still enforcing a 30-day limit on shelter stays for migrants, and has 65,000 asylum seekers in its care.

Adams also discussed the police-involved shooting of Win Rozario, the crackdown on crime, the Pride March and the upcoming Fourth of July holiday.
