Mayor Adams accused of sexual assault by former city employee in lawsuit

MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) – Mayor Eric Adams denied allegations of sexual assault brought by a former city employee in a new lawsuit.

The lawsuit stems from an alleged incident in 1993, in which a woman claimed Adams demanded she perform a sexual act in exchange for helping to obtain a promotion.

The accuser said she refused, but alleges during the incident, Adams forced his hand onto her and also exposed himself. Adams was an NYPD transit officer and a high-ranking member of the Guardians Association, a fraternal organization that advocates for Black members of law enforcement, at the time of the alleged assault.

The woman was a civilian working for the transit police department. The lawsuit also names the city, the NYPD and the Guardians Association.

The civil complaint was filed in Manhattan under New York's Adult Survivors Act on Monday. It was first announced late last year.

The mayor's legal counsel responded, saying in part, "While we review the complaint, the mayor fully denies these outrageous allegations and the events described here; we expect full vindication in court… additionally, in 1993, Eric Adams was one of the most prominent public opponents of the racism within the NYPD, which is why the suit’s allegations that he had any sway over promotions of civilian employees is ludicrous."

The accuser is asking for a trial by jury. PIX11 News reached out to the city, NYPD and the accuser for comment.
