New Manchester City signing Rayan Cherki has promised revenge against Manchester United next season.
The French attacker was part of the Olympique Lyonnais squad that spectacularly lost 6-7 to United in the quarter-finals of the Europa League in April.
Cherki scored a dramatic 95th minute equaliser for his side in the first leg after a fumble by Andre Onana.
He then scored his side’s third in a rollercoaster match at Old Trafford to give Lyon a 3-2 lead on the night in extra-time.
Lyon would go 4-2 up but United mounted an historic comeback to win 5-4 through goals from Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire.
Cherki left his boyhood club to move to United’s rivals Manchester City for £35.5million earlier this month and already has history with the Red Devils.
During the European tie, he was involved in a controversial moment when he was caught on camera grabbing his crotch after scoring Lyon’s third at Old Trafford in front of the United fans.
The home side would have the last laugh of course but Cherki has claimed that he is already thinking about next season.
In comments carried by The Times, he claimed he is already planning revenge for the quarter-final loss in words that City fans will be lapping up.
Speaking on next season he stated, “I’m here to win all the games.”
He elaborated, “I don’t like when Manchester United won the game against Lyon because I am a Lyonnais [he was born in Lyon]. Now I am waiting for the game [to] kill them.”
There is an extra spice to the threat as United were also linked to a move to the player but their interest never seemed to be particularly concrete as they have prioritised moves for Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
The Premier League fixtures for the 2025/2026 season are set to be announced this coming Wednesday and Cherki’s comments will certainly create even more interest to when the red side of Manchester takes on the blue.
