LOWER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (PIX11) --- A man is accused of trying to rape a woman after she tried to escape up an escalator in a Manhattan subway station early Monday morning, police said.
The woman, 30, was standing on the platform of the F train in the East Broadway-Rutgers Street subway station in Chinatown when the suspect came up from behind her at 2:30 a.m., according to the NYPD.
When the woman got away, the suspect allegedly pulled the victim's pants down and tried to rape her when she ran up the escalator, police said.
The suspect then allegedly grabbed the victim's cell phone and threw it over the side of the escalator when she tried calling for help, authorities said.
The suspect ran out of the subway station. There have been no arrests.
The subway rider was not injured during the incident, police said.
Last week, the NYPD announced that subway crimes dropped nearly 20 percent for the first three months of the year, but reported rapes increased by 20 percent citywide, according to police data.
