Mamaearth co-founder Ghazal Alagh has shared a tip on how to master new skills rapidly. In a post on X she emphasised the power of the ‘100-hour rule’, which involves committing 100 hours of deliberate practice to any new skill to achieve mastery.

Alagh herself applied this mindset when starting out, enabling her to acquire abilities she never thought possible. She encouraged others to invest time and effort in learning new skills, emphasising that dedication and practice yield impressive results. “The most common question I keep getting is: ‘How do I learn something that is not in my niche?’ The answer? Apply the 100-hour rule. Commit 100 hours of deliberate practice to any new skill, and you'll master it,” she wrote.

Take a look at the post:

Despite being seemingly manageable, many people struggle to commit to such a routine due to various distractions and excuses.

In the post, Alagh emphasises that consistent practice leads to significant improvements in any skill or task, encouraging individuals to invest daily time towards achieving greatness.

What is the ‘100-hour rule’?

It all started with the 10,000-hour rule popularised by Malcolm Gladwell, stating that it takes 10,000 hours to become world-class at any given skill. But most of us aren’t looking for world-class. That’s where the 100-hour rule comes in. The rule requires focused practice on the particular skill for 16 minutes or 32 minutes every second day.

This deliberate practice is said to make the person much more skillful in the particular field.

Incorporating the 100-hour rule in everyday life means setting aside just a few minutes of doomscrolling on social media to focus on learning something new or improving existing skills, which ultimately leads to mastery and success.

Are you up for it?
