NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) -- Luigi Mangione is now facing a federal murder charge related to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, according to a complaint unsealed Thursday.

Federal authorities filed murder, stalking and weapons charges against the suspected UnitedHealthcare CEO shooter.

Family of Luigi Mangione speaks out following arrest and arraignment

Mangione is scheduled to be arraigned at a Manhattan criminal court Thursday, court records show. He agreed to return to New York to face a state murder charge at a morning court appearance in Pennsylvania where he was arrested last week after five days on the run. It was unclear when he would be in court on the federal charges.

In New York, Mangione is currently facing first- and second-degree murder charges related to terrorism, according to an indictment unsealed this week. The top charges come with a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said.

Mangione is accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on Dec. 4 outside a Midtown Hilton hotel, officials said. District Attorney Alvin Bragg accused Mangione of waiting outside the hotel before shooting him with a 3D-printed ghost gun.

Officials are calling the killing “brazen” and “targeted,” and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Mangione was found with a three-page hand-written document “that speaks to both his motivation and mindset.”

Additionally, the shell casings found on the scene had the words “depose,” “deny,” and “defend” written on them, sources told PIX11 News.
