Lucky voter wins diamond ring in Bhopal on polling day

Bhopal's voter reward lottery, featuring diamond rings, aims to boost MP's voter turnout. Yaggoj Sahu is a winner. More draws planned. The initiative targets increased democratic participation, even in high temperatures.

BHOPAL: Under the gift scheme for voters through a lottery introduced by the Bhopal administration in MP, Yaggoj Sahu won a

diamond ring

at the Char Imli booth in the first draw at 11.00 am. There will be two more draws during the day at 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm at all the polling booths of Bhopal before a bumper draw on May 9.
In a bid to address the low

voter turnout

during the first two phases of the Lok Sabha election, officials in the Bhopal constituency came up with an innovative solution.

They declared that on the polling day, a lucky draw would be conducted every two hours, providing attractive rewards to those who exercise their right to vote.

The goal of this initiative was to motivate a higher number of citizens to participate in voting, during the third phase of the election. Madhya Pradesh has experienced a notable decrease in voter turnout this election cycle, with an average decline of more than 8.5% in the initial two rounds. Bhopal, specifically, has a history of low voter engagement. Even in 2019, when other areas saw an increase in voting, Bhopal's turnout only slightly improved to 65.7%.
"On polling day, we will hold three lucky draws at every polling booth - at 10 am, 3 pm, and 6 pm. One winner in each of these draws will win a prize. And then, a day or two after the election, we will hold a mega draw where big prizes will be distributed to the winners," district election officer, collector Kaushlendra Vikram Singh, told TOI.
