NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – A Texas man was caught trying to bring a loaded gun in his carry-on at JFK airport Friday, according to a TSA spokesperson.
The gun’s owner was arrested Friday and now faces civil penalties up to $15,000, officials said.
The 9mm gun was spotted via X-ray at the security checkpoint with nine bullets loaded, TSA officials said. Port Authority Police then confiscated the gun and arrested the man on a weapons charge, officials said.
“Responsible gun owners know where their firearms are at all times and they know not to bring them to a security checkpoint,” said John Essig, TSA’s Federal Security Director for the airport.

The TSA intercepted 1,503 guns at airport checkpoints in just the first quarter of 2024, the vast majority of which were loaded. Six were stopped at JFK checkpoints, officials said.
"Passengers are permitted to travel with firearms only in checked baggage if they are unloaded and packed in a hard-sided locked case. Then the locked case should be taken to the airline check-in counter to be declared,” Essig said.
Beyond guns, TSA has found some outrageous items in luggage, including snakes inside a man’s pants in Miami.
