Everyone's favourite panda is back in theatres and going by early
box office
estimates, fans have surely missed him. '
Kung Fu Panda
' is back with its fourth instalment and it is set to make a remarkable $52 million in its opening weekend.
The film kicked off its box office collctioned with an impressive $18.4 million on Friday, including $3.8 million in preview screenings, across 4,035 theaters.
Should the film manage to cross the $50 million mark, it will make it the second-biggest debut in the franchise's history. The original 'Kung Fu Panda' set the bar high with a $60.2 million opening back in 2008. The film ended its box office run grossing $632 million globally.
The next two films in the franchise were also successes with 'Kung Fu Panda 2' scoring $665 million worldwide, and the 2016 film 'Kung Fu Panda 3' making a $41 million debut and scoring an overall total collection of $521 million.
It must be noted that the animated film faces some stiff competition at the box office from '
Dune: Part Two
' which has already become the year's highest grossing film, with a collection surpassing the $200 million mark. According to the latest reports, the film is expected to see a 50% drop in its second weekend, to secure a collection estimated at around $41 million. This brings the total domestic earnings for
Denis Villeneuve
's adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel to $152 million by the end of Sunday, across 4,074 theaters in North America.
While Po is expected to climb his way to the top of the box office, with 'Dune 2' likely to finish as a close second, in third place, is the horror film 'Imaginary' eyeing a respectable $10 million debut. The film grossed $3.2 million to $3.8 million on its opening day.
Next on the list is 'Cabrini', poised to earn an estimated $9 million to $9.4 million for the weekend.
Rounding out the top five is '
Bob Marley
: One Love', which earned a cumulative total of $89.7 million. The film is set to hit digital platforms on March 19.
