NEW DELHI: The
Pittsburgh Steelers
find themselves in the midst of a quarterback conundrum as they navigate the offseason, exploring various options to solidify their signal-caller position. While
Mason Rudolph
and
Kenny Pickett
remain the primary considerations, recent discussions have brought
Justin Fields
' name into the spotlight.
On the Rich Eisen Show, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette revealed that he wouldn't be surprised if Fields ends up with the Steelers, even though Rudolph is considered their initial preference.
Drawing from insights into the team's past draft evaluations, Dulac recalled the Steelers' strong interest in Fields during the 2021 NFL Draft.
"When Justin Fields was coming out... if he were on the board and the Steelers had the opportunity, they would take Justin Fields over any other player," Dulac shared, emphasizing the high regard the Steelers have for the young quarterback.
This echoes previous reports, including ESPN's Adam Schefter highlighting Coach Mike Tomlin's admiration for Fields. Reports suggest that multiple members of the Steelers' front office have expressed interest in acquiring the Chicago Bears' quarterback, making him a potential trade candidate this offseason.
Despite the ongoing speculation, Dulac acknowledged the Steelers' commitment to Kenny Pickett for at least one more season. Pickett, with a 14-10 record as a starter, has shown moments of progress, and the team is seemingly inclined to give him another opportunity.
However, the possibility of adding Justin Fields to the roster has not been ruled out entirely. Dulac acknowledged that while it might be mildly surprising given the current commitment to Pickett, the Steelers could still value what they initially sought in the 2021 NFL Draft over subsequent developments in the 2022 NFL Draft.
