NEW DELHI: Following the death of President
Ebrahim Raisi
in the helicopter accident, vice president
Mohammad Mokhber
was appointed as interim president, as announced by Iran's supreme leader
Ali Khamenei
on Monday.
Khamenei stated that Mokhber has a maximum of 50 days to organize and conduct elections to choose a new president, according to Iran's official news agency IRNA.
"Mokhber will manage the executive branch and is obliged to arrange with the heads of the legislative and judicial branches to elect a new president within a maximum of 50 days," he said.
Born on September 1, 1955, in Dezful, Khuzestan Province, Mokhber has a background in business administration and management. Known for his close ties to supreme leader Ali Khamenei, Mokhber assumed the role of first vice president in 2021 following Ebrahim Raisi's election as president.
The chopper crash also claimed the life of foreign minister
Hossein Amirabdollahian
following which the deputy foreign minister
Ali Bagheri Kani
was appointed the acting minister by the Iranian cabinet.
Kani assumed the role of deputy foreign minister in September 2021. Additionally, Kani also held the position of deputy secretary within Iran's supreme national security council from 2007 to 2013.
Raisi and Amirabdollahian were both declared dead on Monday after their helicopter crashed one day prior. Iran has declared five days of mourning following the death of their top leaders.
