Disney's latest animated sensation, ‘

Inside Out 2

’, has taken the Korean box office by storm, hooking audiences with its heartfelt portrayal of

adolescence

and emotional growth. According to the

Korean Film Council

(KOFIC), the film has amassed a staggering 4.63 million viewers as of Friday, firmly establishing its dominance since its release on June 12.

The sequel, directed by Kelsey Mann, continues the journey of

Riley

, a 13-year-old navigating the complexities of puberty and encountering a spectrum of new emotions - such as anxiety, envy, embarrassment, and ennui. This thematic exploration resonates deeply with viewers, driving the film's popularity to new heights.

On Thursday alone, ‘Inside Out 2’ surpassed expectations by selling over 100,000 tickets, maintaining its stronghold at the top of the box office for an impressive 16 consecutive days. In contrast, other notable contenders like the thriller ‘Hijack 1971’, based on a true story of a daring plane hijacking, and the chilling horror ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’, set in a dystopian world plagued by sound-sensitive creatures, trailed behind with 48,796 and 45,236 viewers respectively on the same day.

The success of ‘Inside Out 2’ builds on the legacy of its predecessor, the 2015 original ‘Inside Out’, which captured the hearts of 4.97 million Korean viewers. With its current momentum, industry experts anticipate the sequel to surpass this record, solidifying its place as a beloved animated classic.

Reflecting on the film's impact, director Kelsey Mann expressed his aspirations in an interview with Variety, stating, "I really wish I had a movie like this when I was growing up because I know you’re going through a lot at that age. And a lot of the time you think it’s only you that’s going through it, that no one else is going through it. I knew that was a big opportunity with this movie. We can make this big film that goes out to the world to tell a lot of people that they’re not alone", as quoted by KTimes.
