Telangana's Drugs Control Administration (DCA) on Tuesday seized 118 kg of illegal drugs worth Rs 5.50 lakh. The drugs, manufactured by Hyderabad-based Aspen Biopharma Labs Pvt Ltd, were seized during a raid on the premises of the firm.

The officials seized 110 kg of 'ciprofloxacin hydrochloride' and 8.4 kg of 'gatifloxacin hydrochloride'. The antibiotics are commonly used to treat infections caused by certain bacteria.

Aspen Biopharma was asked by the DCA to cease manufacturing of the drugs.

The drug company was issued a 'Stop Production Order' in March 2023 by the drugs control agency after the two drugs were found during an inspection not to be in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and other provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

However, Aspen Biopharma continued to manufacture both the drugs, leading to action by the authorities. The DCA officials seized the drugs stocked for sale. A detailed investigation is underway.
