NEW DELHI: Voting for the
Howrah constituency
in the Lok Sabha elections is scheduled for May 20, marking the fifth phase of the electoral process. West Bengal will witness voting across all seven phases, spanning from April 19 to June 1, to elect 42 members to the Lok Sabha.
The election results will be announced on June 4, 2024. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal, the TMC won 22 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, while the BJP gained notable momentum with 18 seats.
Congress won two seats.
The Lok Sabha candidates from Howrah constituency include Prasun Banerjee from AITC, Sabyasachi Chatterjee from CPI(M), and Rathin Chakraborty from BJP.
In 2019, the Howrah parliamentary constituency boasted a total of 1,633,925 eligible voters. Prasun Banerjee of the All India Trinamool Congress emerged victorious, clinching the seat with a total of 576,711 votes. Rantidev Sengupta, the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate, secured second place with a total of 473,016 votes, trailing behind by a margin of 103,695 votes.
In 2014, the Howrah parliamentary constituency boasted a total of 1,505,099 eligible voters. Out of this, 1,125,399 votes were deemed valid. The victory went to Prasun Banerjee of the All India Trinamool Congress, who garnered 488,461 votes, securing the seat as MP. The runner-up, Sridip Bhattacharya of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), gathered 291,505 votes, falling short by 196,956 votes.
The main parties vying for seats in West Bengal include the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and a coalition of Left Front and Indian National Congress.
The model code of conduct came into effect from March 16 and will continue until the completion of the vote counting process on June 4.
