The
IPL finale
saw a culinary war rage on social media as team KKR helped establish the supremacy of Kolkata’s ‘
aloo wala
’
biryani
.
It was a memorable Sunday for Kolkata, as KKR trounced SRH at the IPL finals in Chennai. But another, equally interesting battle was being fought on social media – between loyalists of the Kolkata and Hyderabadi biryanis, the former distinguished by the presence of potatoes.
The never-ending debate over which biryani is better was settled once KKR lifted the trophy. At least for now.
It was an incredible win last night. As far as the biryani debate is concerned, potato is the soul of biryani and there’s nothing better than the Kolkata version, which has our heart

And the winner is... the potato!
I’m a Kolkata guy and for me, biryani means the Kolkata biryani. The potato makes all the difference, and I wouldn’t have my biryani any other way. KKR is very close to my heart and this victory is all the more special because of the team spirit the boys have shown
– Romiit Raaj, actor
We celebrated the victory with biryani, and I don’t know why people even try to compare Kolkata biryani with any other. The potato and egg make all the difference. Other biryanis are tasty, but if one wants to feel satisfied, then it should be Kolkata biryani
– Trina Saha Bhattacharya, actress
My friends from Hyderabad ask me why we put aloo in biryani. How do I tell them that the aloo is the main character and everything else is secondary. With KKR’s win the aloo supremacy has been established
