NEW YORK (PIX11) -- Harlem was alive with creativity and inspiration on Saturday night as Excellence Sound Academy hosted Rising Stars Unplugged at the iconic Apollo Victoria Theatre.
The event provided a platform for talented young artists to showcase their passion for music, dance, spoken word, and performance.
The evening featured electrifying performances from emerging talents like Brycen Byrd, who shared his emotional connection to the venue: "This means a lot to me because I remember growing up in Harlem, just four blocks away from here. Seeing my name in those lights is a full-circle moment for me," Byrd said.
Alvin James, 15, also captivated the audience with his heartfelt rap. He explained how music allows him to express his emotions.
"It's easier for me to explain my feelings into a mic," James shared.
Co-executive directors Evan Brown and Brandon Walker highlighted the importance of events like Rising Stars Unplugged, especially as arts programs continue to disappear.
"We're bringing kids off the streets and into a space where they can explore their creativity," Brown explained. The academy also teaches crucial skills in songwriting, audio engineering, scoring, and navigating the business side of the music industry.
City Councilman Yusef Salaam added a touch of inspiration by sharing a powerful poem and presenting citations to Brown and Walker for their contributions to uplifting young voices through the arts.
