Gulbadin Naib, on Tuesday, May 7, made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut when DC picked him to play in their home match against RR at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Having played international cricket since 2011, the 32-year-old Naib has plenty of experience. He also led the Afghans in the 2019 ODI World Cup in England and Wales.
Naib was earlier picked as a replacement for Mitchell Marsh, who is currently recovering from a hamstring injury. In the game against RR, Naib replaced South African pacer Lizaad Williams in the playing XI. In 126 T20 matches, Gulbadin has scored 1626 runs and picked up 70 wickets.

Naib has joined an elite list of Afghan cricketers to play in the IPL along with Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohammad Nabi, Azmatullah Omarzai, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Noor Ahmad and Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Left-arm wrist spinner Zahir Khan Pakteen was picked by the Royals in IPL 2018, but he did not play a match for them due to injury.
Apart from Naib, South Africa’s Donovan Ferreira also made his IPL debut for RR. The 25-year-old plays for the Joburg Super Kings in the SA20. In 53 T20 matches, the youngster has scored 933 runs at a strike-rate of 153.96 with 4 fifties and a top score of 82 not out to his name.
The Royals are 1 win away from making their way through to the playoffs. DC, on the other hand, are trying to break into the top 4 after initially starting with a string of defeats.
