Govt clears Rs 16,000cr for strategic highway near China border

NEW DELHI: The

road transport ministry

has sanctioned around Rs 16,000 crore for construction of over 600km of the 1,748-km

Frontier Highway

in Arunachal Pradesh, indicating govt's priority to improve

connectivity

and

infrastructure

along the border, reports Dipak Dash. The greenfield highway (NH 913) will run close to the India-Tibet-China-Myanmar border-barely 20 km from it at several locations.
Road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said the development of the highway stretches will significantly enhance connectivity to border areas.

"It is anticipated to curb migration and facilitate reverse migration towards the border areas of Arunachal Pradesh," Gadkari said. He added that the approved stretches play a vital role in establishing essential road infrastructure connecting significant river basins, thereby enabling the development of several hydropower projects within the state. This highway road is designed to link uninhabited and sparsely populated areas of Upper Arunachal, making it conducive to tourism, Gadkari added.
Sources said govt highway agencies will soon bid out the approved stretches and work will start by July-Aug this year.
