is reportedly planning to introduce a revamped
design
for the
status bar icons
in the upcoming
Android 15
update. The new design has been spotted in the
developer previews
of
Android
15 and is said to bring back the segmented design for status bar icons that was last seen in Android 4.4 (KitKat).
According to Android Authority, the Wi-Fi signal strength, mobile data signal strength, and battery icons in the new design will feature a segmented design, moving away from the solid block design that has been in use since Android 5.0 (Lollipop).
Additionally, the battery icon will now support displaying the current battery level inside the icon, rather than on the right side as seen in previous versions of Android.
Android Authority also reports that Android 15 will introduce haptic feedback to the Quick Settings panel. Users will experience a slight vibration when long-pressing on a Quick Setting tile, such as Bluetooth, as the tile expands to open the relevant settings page. Haptic feedback will also be added to the volume slider, providing a tactile response when adjusting the volume level, similar to the haptic feedback experienced when adjusting the brightness level using the slider in the Quick Settings panel.
These changes are not currently enabled by default in the public Android 15 Developer Preview 2 release. However, Android Authority manually enabled them for their report. It remains to be seen whether Google will move forward with these changes in the final release of Android 15 or if they will be included in the first or second public beta.
The last significant visual change to the status bar icons came with the introduction of Android 5.0 (Lollipop) in 2014, which brought Google's Material Design language to the platform..
The Android 15 update is expected to release in Q3 2024.
