GHAZIABAD
: A 55-year-old
salesman
who allegedly killed his wife on Feb 27 and remained cooped up in their one-room house till March 1, the body lying on the bed, was
arrested
on Saturday.
Police were informed by locals who became suspicious. “There was a foul smell emanating from the house. Neighbours who went there saw the body of the woman on the bed and alerted police,” a senior police officer told TOI.
According to cops, Bharat strangled Sunita (51) after an argument earlier this week at their house in Ambedkar Nagar.
After killing her, he is believed to have stayed in the house for three to four days. He left his home only on Friday to go to work. On Saturday, locals got to know about her death after the stench reached other homes. And Bharat allegedly came out of the house in an intoxicated state to claim he had killed Sunita.
ACP (Masuri) Naresh Kumar said they got information about the body around 3pm on Saturday.
“The accused was taken into custody and the body was sent for postmortem examination. The body had started to decompose. During investigation, it was discovered that Bharat killed his wife on the night of Feb 27 following a quarrel,” the ACP said.
Another police officer said this was the second marriage for both Bharat and Sunita. “They were in a live-in relationship for the past 13 to 14 years, before tying the knot at a local court two and a half years ago,” the officer said.
He added that Bharat continued to provide financial support to his first wife, and Sunita disapproved of that. Frequent visits by Bharat’s first wife to their house often led to quarrels between the couple.
“On the night of Feb 27, a heated argument ensued, culminating in Bharat strangling Sunita. Bharat, employed as a salesman, refrained from leaving till Friday when he locked his main door and left for work,” the officer said. The ACP said based on a complaint by Sunita’s family members, an FIR was registered at Masuri police station under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC.
