MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) --- A former NYPD employee was attacked after trying to help a cab driver who was being harassed on the Upper East Side Tuesday night, according to police and sources.
Five suspects surrounded the man, 65, when he intervened on behalf of the cab driver near East 84th Street and Park Avenue at around 8 p.m., police and sources said.
A fight started before one of the suspects punched the retired city worker in the face and knocked him over with his bookbag, according to police and sources.
The victim suffered minor injuries and refused medical attention at the scene.
The victim was a former lieutenant with the NYPD's Deputy Commissioner of Public Information office, sources said.
The group took off after the incident. There have been no arrests.
