Chennai: Five IAS officials –

district collectors

of Trichy, Thanjavur, Vellore, Karur and Ariyalur — have been summoned afresh by

Enforcement Directorate

(ED) to appear for inquiry on Thursday in connection with the probe into the money-laundering from

illegal sand mining

.
Sources confirmed that five IAS officials will appear before the ED officials as state govt has accorded permission foe the officials to comply with the Supreme Court's order.

The state govt had initially moved Madras high court for a stay of the summonses issued to district collectors by ED in Nov 2023. The central agency, however, approached the Supreme Court, which then directed the state govt and the IAS officials to cooperate with the investigation in the case. "Based on the outcome of Thursday's inquiry, the officials may be summoned again, if required, to bring relevant documents pertinent to the case," added the source.
Enforcement Directorate registered a case under PMLA based on four FIRs about illegal sand mining in river beds in the State and conducted searches in 34 places linked to sand mining contractors and businessmen S Ramachandran, K Rathinam, Karikalan and their auditor Shanmugaraj and seized gold, cash and documents.
ED claimed that the value of sand mining conducted in Tamil Nadu was to the tune of ₹4,730 crore as against the recorded revenue of ₹36.45 crore as per state records and wanted to inquire respective district collectors.
