MELROSE, the Bronx (PIX11) – Firefighters and emergency responders have been battling a fire and the heat all day Thursday in the Bronx.
The four-alarm fire broke out in the Melrose neighborhood early Thursday, according to the FDNY. It was first reported in a commercial building when employees were opening a nearby Dunkin'.
Business owners said they were heartbroken.
Djounedou Titikpina is the owner of Holland Textiles in the shopping center. They were known for African fabrics and custom-made clothing and embroidery.
“Life is sometimes surprising. Yesterday, we were enjoying our business, and today we cannot enter. That shows how life can change overnight,” Titikpina said as he looked over the burned storefront and clothing.
Many prom and wedding dresses were lost in the blaze.
Three firefighters went to the hospital with minor injuries, authorities said.
At least four stores along the 3000 block of Third Avenue between East 155th and 156th streets were destroyed in the blaze, according to the FDNY.
The heat and humidity fueled hot spots. The fire marshal will begin investigating once the fire is officially extinguished.
