championships Soha registered a thrilling 2-1 victory over 30-year-old Sowjanya at the Nagpur District Hard Court Tennis Association (NDHTA) courts in Ram Nagar on Tuesday.
Having failed to beat Sowjanya in their three previous meetings since 2019, Karnataka’s upcoming star Soha recorded a hard-fought 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 victory over her experienced opponent ranked 351 places above her in WTA rankings.
With this stunning victory, Soha booked her pre-quarterfinal berth where she will face Russia’s Ekaterina Yashina. The unseeded Yashina surprised eighth seed Thasaporn Naklo of Thailand 7-5, 6-4 for the second upset of the day.
Earlier, Yashina’s Russian compatriot Daria Kudashova stunned sixth seed Fanny Ostlund from Sweden 7-5, 7-6 (6).
The two local wildcards Maithali Mothe and Sejal Bhutada were sent packing. Nineteen-year-old Sonal Patil from Kolhapur posted a resounding 6-0, 6-1 win over Maithali while second seed Dalila Jakupovic of Slovenia blanked Sejal in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
In the women’s doubles round of 16, the Korean and Lithuania duo of Yeonwoo Ku and Justina Mikulskyte defeated the Indian pair of Vaishnavi Adkar and Ishwari Matere 6-2, 7-5. Similarly, the French and Latvian combination of Yasmine Mansouri and Diana Marcinkevica outclassed Sonal Patil and Bela Tamhankar 6-2, 6-1 to enter the quarterfinals.
