Telecom equipment giant
Ericsson
predicts a bright future for
5G
in India. The company's India Managing Director,
Nitin Bansal
, expects significant applications (use cases) for 5G to emerge within the next two years. These applications will drive the need for denser telecom networks across the country.
Ericsson is actively collaborating with universities, industry partners, and other stakeholders to develop India-specific 5G solutions.
Bansal emphasized the importance of the Indian market, highlighting it as Ericsson's second-largest globally.
Looking ahead, Bansal sees continued growth in 5G adoption fueled by India's strong data demand and digitalization push. This will necessitate network upgrades and infrastructure improvements, including modernizing billing and operational support systems (OSS/BSS).
Ericsson's sales in India did see a decline recently, reflecting a return to more balanced investment levels after a period of rapid 5G rollout.
The recent financial developments at
Vodafone
Idea (VIL), including their debt resolution and planned investments, are positive signs for network equipment providers like Ericsson. However, the company declined to comment specifically on VIL's plans.
VIL has announced its focus on expanding both 4G coverage and deploying 5G services in major cities. Regarding 4G's future, Bansal pointed to Ericsson's Mobility Report, which indicates 4G will remain the dominant subscription technology for some time. However, the report also forecasts a gradual decline in 4G subscriptions as users migrate to 5G.
Ericsson has begun manufacturing 5G equipment in India to meet the high domestic demand. This production capacity is now also being utilized to serve other regions globally.
