NEW YORK (PIX11) -- New Yorkers who may have subscribed to Equinox gyms and later had trouble canceling those memberships may see a refund coming their way, according to New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Equinox Group will pay up to $250 in refunds to former customers as well as $600,000 in penalties after settlement with customers who filed complaints, the attorney general announced on Friday. New York subscribers may also be eligible for up to $100 in restitution.
James says Equinox failed to clearly disclose its subscription terms, did not provide consumers with the subscription acknowledgment required by New York law, and did not offer cost-effective and easy-to-use online cancellation mechanisms.
“New Yorkers should be able to cancel a membership they no longer use or want without breaking a sweat,” said the attorney general. “The Equinox Group made it challenging for customers to end their membership, costing them time and money."
The AG's office found that Equinox’s subscription terms were hidden in fine print disclosures or in the company's terms and conditions. Equinox also did not get informed consent from subscribers nor were customers given a post-purchase acknowledgment, according to James.
Following the settlement Equinox must obtain informed consent from subscribers and provide them an acknowledgment. Additionally, the fitness company must clearly disclose cancellation information in subscription agreements and on an easily accessible website.
New York customers of Equinox who became subscribers or attempted to cancel their subscription between Feb. 9, 2021 and May 19, 2025 must email Equinox Group by July 19. SoulCycle subscribers should email [email protected]. Equinox Gym and Equinox+ subscribers should email [email protected].
