TEZPUR: An

elephant calf

was discovered deceased in

Sonitpur district

of Assam, as confirmed by

forest officials

on Sunday.
On Saturday night, a herd of 10 wild elephants, including a calf, entered

Bihaguri Kalitagaon

in the West

Sonitpur

forest division of Tezpur, as confirmed by a forest department official.
"The Forest Department pushed back the herd, but the calf was unable to move due to injury and it was left behind by the group.

The local people provided food to the calf during the night", assistant conservator of forest (Sonitpur) Gautam Mahanta said.
The elephant calf was estimated to be around three years old and fell down in the field, he added.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death. The calf's body showed no signs of injury.
"If the post-mortem cannot find out the reasons for the untimely death, the organs will be sent for the forensic science department to detect the cause", he added.
According to Mahanta, it is unusual for elephant herds to enter farmlands during this time of year, as the fields are barren.
