NASHIK: Two
burglars
made off with over 13kg of gold, valued at over Rs 4.9 crore, from a private
bank
's home loans department office along Gangapur Road in
Nashik
city between 2.30am and 3am on Saturday.
The criminals gained entry through a window on the first floor of the commercial complex. They emptied the
safe
containing the
jewellery
within half-hour before fleeing the scene.
CCTV footage
captured two masked individuals in the act.
DCP
(Zone 1) Kirankumar Chavan said, "The office of the bank is located on the first floor of the building, with a window on the rear side. The window does not have a regular iron bars' grille. The burglars climbed up to the window, opened its latch and entered the office. There was a safe in one cabin of the office, with its key in a bag alongside it and another key in the drawer of a table. The burglars calmly used both the keys to open the safe and decamped with the jewellery."
The theft was discovered on Saturday evening, when a staffer of the office went to deposit the day's collected gold jewellery and found the safe empty. The stolen gold belonged to 222 customers who had provided the jewellery as collateral for loans.
Investigators from the Sarkarwada police station said the thieves disabled the
security alarm
before committing the crime, suggesting that they had prior knowledge of the office's layout and security measures.
