KOLKATA: Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday publicly disowned her youngest
brother
, Babun Banerjee, after he protested former footballer Prasun Banerjee's nomination as Trinamool's candidate for Howrah Lok Sabha seat and threatened to take him on as an Independent.
"I don't like
greedy
people," the CM said, alluding to her sibling. "Forget there were ever any familial ties between us; there is nothing from today. People are free to choose and fight on their own wherever they want." Mamata said she had always preferred and practiced "manushtantra" (politics for people) over "parivartantra" (politics for family). "Not everything can be said publicly; we sometimes can't speak of the pain in our hearts. Some feel the urge to become councillors, MLAs, or MPs whenever elections are near. I will end up doing parivartantra if everyone in my family starts asking for tickets. My only family is people."
