The Congress secured decisive victories in both the Inner and Outer Manipur constituencies in the 2024 Lok Sabha election results declared on Tuesday.
Angomcha Bimol Akoijam and Alfred Kan-Ngam Arthur emerged victorious in the Inner and Outer Manipur Parliamentary constituencies, respectively. They defeated Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh and Kacchui Timothy Zimik of the BJP-National People's Party (NPP)- Naga People's Front (NPF) alliance.
Bimol, a Jawaharlal Nehru University professor, was a favoured candidate for many voters seeking an alternative to the ruling BJP, securing 3,74,017 out of 7,89,912 total votes. He was hand-picked by senior Congress leaders amid state unrest, as no other party leaders were willing to contest.
Arthur's victory in Outer Manipur marks him as the third Tangkhul Naga to win a Lok Sabha election, following Rungsung Suisa's win in 1957. The 50-year-old former legislator defeated NPF’s Zimik by over 60,000 votes.
Other candidates for the Inner seat included Maheshwar Thounaojam of RPI (Athawale), independent candidate Moirangthem Totomsana, Rajkumar Somendra Singh, and Haorungbam Sarat.
In Outer Manipur, Congress candidate Arthur won by securing 3,84,954 out of 7,89,793 total votes.
Celebrating his 51st birthday on the vote-counting day, Arthur defeated his nearest rival, NPF’s Kachui Timothy Zimik, who secured 2,99,536 votes.
All four Naga candidates, contested the Outer Manipur seat, including independent candidates S Kho John and Alyson Abonmai.
