LONG BEACH, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Beaches along the City of Long Beach were closed Friday after rumors that students from nearby schools would be cutting classes, according to the local police department.
The beaches were closed out of an abundance of caution and in the interest of the residents' safety, the announcement said on Facebook.
The Long Beach Police Department also partnered with authorities from Nassau County and the MTA for additional resources.
The move came after a 16-year-old was shot on Long Beach during "skip-school day" in 2024. Local residents say thousands of kids flood the boardwalk on what's known as "Senior Skip Day" an annual event that is spread by word of mouth in the area.
Entrances to beaches in the city will be physically blocked off on Friday but there's no word on whether they will reopen on Saturday.
