CES 2024: Sony shows off its Vision Pro rival, coming later this year

1 year ago 25

Sony

has unveiled a new mixed-reality headset at this year's CES show in Las Vegas. Unlike the PlayStation VR 2, this new headset is standalone and aimed at "

spatial content creators

," basically creators and artists who’d want to work in virtual spaces, a similar pitch to what

Apple

has for its

Vision Pro

headset.
The headset has a matte grey finish and resembles Sony's other headset,

PlayStation VR2

. The headset has a flip-up visor, with two cameras facing out from the front, along with a controller wand and a smaller peripheral that is similar in size to a ring. Sony says that it has fine-tuned the balance of the headset's center of gravity.
Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, which was just announced at CES, powers this. The headset features dual 4K OLED microdisplays, and according to Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida, the headset will provide a "crisp viewing experience" and "intuitive interaction for

3D design

".
There are a total of six cameras and sensors on the headset for the "video see-through" functionality. The headset provides “user and space tracking,”and Sony says that its tech renders high-definition textures and facial expressions in real-time for mixed-reality experiences. the visor flips out, allowing users to switch between the virtual and physical landscapes.

Then, the controllers - one called the "ring controller" is for manipulating objects, and the other – the "pointing controller" – is, as the name implies, for pointing.
Sony says it wants creators to design 3D models in real-time by using controllers and traditional input devices like keyboards in combination.
The headset is scheduled to be released later this year, so we expect to learn more about it at that time, including its pricing.
