NEW DELHI: US president Joe Biden on Thursday stressed on the need for Washington to uphold its '
sacred commitment
' to
Nato
as the
security alliance
formed at the end of the cold war approaches its
75th anniversary
.
"We must remember that the sacred commitment we make to our Allies -- to defend every inch of NATO territory -- makes us safer too," Biden said in a statement.
Recently, Nato members have been increasingly concerned about the potential prospect of former president Trump's return to the White House in the November's US presidential election.
Joe Biden's election rival Donald Trump has constantly undermined Nato's collective defense guarantee on his campaign.
Trump recently said he would encourage Russia to attack any members defaulting on payments for defence. During his time in office, he also considered withdraw from the alliance over accusations that other states were defaulting on payments.
Meanwhile, Biden praised NATO's unity over the two years, the alliance's increased military assistance to Ukraine amidst Russia's aggressive invasion.
With Finland and Sweden joining in the aftermath of the Ukraine conflict, Biden said that NATO is now "bigger, stronger, and more resolute than ever before."
"As our adversaries have plotted to break our remarkable unity, our democracies have stood unwavering," said Joe Biden.
The United States will host NATO's 75th anniversary summit in Washington in July.
