Once considered the fortress of
Azam Khan
,
Rampur
LS seat is now witnessing a bitter fight within
SP
with Azam's
supporters
, who comprise a majority of the workers of the party's district unit, not campaigning for
Muhibullah Nadvi
, imam of a Delhi-based mosque, who has been given the party ticket for the constituency.
Nadvi, meanwhile, has also taken an aggressive stance.
"I am not going to persuade him to lend me support," he told TOI.
Even though Nadvi is putting up a spirited front, his rallies notably lack the presence of many party members. He claimed though that things are "under control".
SP district president Ajay Sagar said, "While differences existed initially, they have been resolved, and we stand united."
Contradicting Sagar's assertion, former district president Virendra Goyal said, "Azam's decision to nominate an external candidate without consulting us has led to unrest among party members. "
