NEW DELHI: Punjab on Friday moved Supreme Court raising a politically sensitive inter-state
dispute
over control of British-built Shanan hydroelectric project at Joginder Nagar in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh & sought a direction restraining Congress-led HP govt from taking over the project on expiry of the 99-year
lease
, signed in 1925.
Appearing for Punjab, advocate Shadan Farasat informed a bench led by CJI D Y Chandrachud that the lease will expire on March 2 and sought an urgent hearing on the original suit filed by Bhagwant Mann govt raising an inter-state dispute under Article 131of the Constitution which can only be heard by
SC
.
CJI agreed to list the suit next week.
Sukhvinder Sukhu-led Congress govt in Himachal is determined not to renew the lease to wrest control of the project. This issue may lead to fissures among INDIA bloc constituents AAP and Congress ahead of LS polls. Punjab accused Himachal of intending to take over the project in a mala fide manner.
