iPhone
17 series phones that could be much more scratch resistant than the
Ceramic Shield glass
found on the current iPhones. Not just that but the new glass could also have anti-reflective properties, similar to the
Gorilla Glass Armor
screen of Galaxy S24 Ultra.
Tipster Instant Digital on Weibo (via MacRumors), suggests that the iPhone 17 screens might come with upgraded glass, which would have a “super-hard anti-reflective layer.” Rumour is that this glass would be more scratch-resistant “than you think.”
This glass would be used on iPhone 17 since the coating equipment has just been procured by Chinese suppliers, so there is not enough time to ready new glass for the iPhone 16 series that should launch later this year in September.
After using custom Gorilla Glass for years,
Apple
upgraded to Ceramic Shield glass (also developed by Corning) on the iPhone 12 series. Apple says that Ceramic Shield has ceramic nanocrystals infused in an interlocked glass matrix that helps to protect against cracks and chips, and if Apple is to believe it is “tougher than any smartphone glass.” Until Corning came up with the Gorilla Armor glass.
The Corning Gorilla Armor glass was first introduced on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which launched earlier this year. The Gorilla Armor glass, according to Corning, reduces reflections by 75% compared to regular glass surfaces. Moreover, this panel is resistant to micro scratches that tend to accumulate on other glass panels over time. Corning claims that their Armor glass offer over 4 times more scratch resistance than competitive aluminosilicate cover glasses.
It's unclear if Apple will use Gorilla Glass Armor for the iPhone 17, but the description aligns with a Chinese leaker's claims. Corning, a long-time Apple supplier has invested $495 million in Corning for R&D, so it could provide a similar technology under a different name.
