Apple
is expected to introduce new
iPad Pro
and
iPad Air
models soon. The Cupertino-based tech giant is also reportedly working on new accessories for its tablets. According to a report by 9to5Mac, evidence about the company developing a new
Apple Pencil 3
model has been discovered recently. The report also notes that the
iPad
accessory is also likely to feature a new “squeeze” gesture.
What is the “squeeze” gesture and how it may work
Earlier this week, Apple rolled out the iPadOS 17.5 beta for developers. The code of the latest beta version reportedly includes multiple pieces of evidence that point towards a new gesture for
Apple Pencil
called “squeeze”.
The report claims that the gesture can be used for quick interactions with iPads like adding shapes, signatures, stickers, or a text field. Users might be able to trigger the gesture by pressing the surface of the upcoming Apple Pencil model.
However, this is not the first Apple Pencil model to support gestures. Apple Pencil 2 supports a double-tap gesture that enables users to switch between different tools in certain apps. The report notes that for this feature, Apple didn’t add any pressure sensors (which is only placed on the tip) on the surface of the accessory.
This suggests that the new “squeeze” gesture found in the iPadOS 17.5 beta version is expected to be added to the rumoured Apple Pencil 3.
Also, for the first time, Apple has updated the interface for pairing an Apple Pencil to reportedly support new, non-existent hardware.
Earlier this year, another report claimed of discovering evidence of Apple Pencil support in the
Find My app
. It’s important to note that currently none of the available Apple Pencil models can be tracked via the Find My network.
As per the report, iPadOS 17.4 also introduced a new version of the PencilKit API. Developers can use this API to make their apps compatible with the upcoming Apple Pencil.
However, Apple has yet to reveal what new capabilities PencilKit 3 will add for users. Rumours suggest that Apple Pencil 3 may also support interchangeable
magnetic tips
.
