NEW YORK (PIX11) --- New York health officials have issued an Air Quality Alert for Friday as the dangerous heat continues to suffocate the tri-state area.

The advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. for New York City, Long Island, and the Lower Hudson Valley, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

The agency predicts high levels of ground-level ozone, a key factor in smog caused by car emissions, officials said.

The Air Quality Index for the five boroughs and Long Island is expected to be 115, which is considered unhealthy for certain groups.
