AHMEDABAD: After relatively cool weather due to the effect of a Western Disturbance, the city again felt the

heat

with Monday’s maximum

temperature

reaching 40 degrees celsius, 1 degree above normal. It is after 11 days that the

maximum

temperature has again reached 40°C. Monday’s minimum temperature of 25.5 degrees too was 2.3 degrees above normal.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, the maximum temperature on Tuesday is likely to be around 40 degrees. While there will be no major change in maximum temperature in the next five days, the combination of heat and humid air in coastal areas could cause discomfort to locals, indicated forecast.
At 41.7 degrees, Bhuj had the highest maximum temperature, followed by 41.1 degrees in Deesa and Surendranagar each, and 41 degrees in Rajkot.
Looking at the rising heat and the forecast for a severe summer ahead, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has installed a high-pressure sprinkler system at a crossroads near Kankaria Lakefront. The system turns water from its sprinklers into fine mist, giving commuters, especially two-wheeler riders, some respite from the searing heat. The AMC also announced that till July 15, Atal Bridge, the Sabarmati Riverfront’s lower promenade along with public parks will remain open till 11pm.

Meanwhile, a seven-year-old child died, and six others were hospitalized with severe diarrhoea. The six children – aged between two and ten years – were taken to Civil Hospital on Monday evening. Hospital superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi said that the patients include three boys and three girls.
“They had severe dehydration and diarrhoea. They are on medication and are stable now. It seems to be a case of water contamination,” he said.

District health officials said the incident took place in Chhekda village near Bavla.
The children live near a kiln and belong to the same extended family. “Some of them reported diarrhoea on Sunday night and others started developing symptoms early on Monday. They were first taken to a local hospital where one of the boys, 7, succumbed. Others are stable. We have asked poeple not to drink without chlorination,” said a senior official.
