AGRA:
Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation
(UPMRC) has changed the name of
Jama Masjid metro station
to '
Mankameshwar
'. Following orders of the
state govt
, new hoardings were installed and entrance point painted saffron.
Last July, UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath pointed out to officials to "rename Jama Masjid metro station after ancient Shiv temple Mankameshwar".
Both temple and mosque are located near each other. Jama Masjid metro station, as earlier mentioned in the detailed project report of Agra metro rail project, is part of the 6-km long priority corridor.According to UPMRC, with the completion of the priority corridor, with a mix of three elevated and three underground stations between Taj Mahal east gate and Mankameshwar station, the target is to have metro rail running on the stretch in the first week of March. UPMRC spokesperson Panchanan Mishra said, "Agra metro rail trials are in its final stages. We've sent a proposal for the Prime Minister's visit to inaugurate the priority corridor."
Decision to rename the station drew mixed response from residents. Some hailed the "gesture" as an acknowledgement of the temple's historical importance. While others pointed out renaming a station associated with a significant monument undermines the city's diverse heritage.
