JERICHO, N.Y. (PIX11) – After human remains were unearthed and brought out of the woods in a nature preserve on Long Island by dozens of law enforcement officers, many questions linger, as do residents' concerns.
Officers from the Dept. of Homeland Security, the FBI-NYPD Joint Task Force, Nassau County Police Department's Gang Task Force and other agencies entered the Underhill Preserve around 6 p.m. on Wednesday. They cut away branches and underbrush to get to a specific location about a quarter-mile into the woods across from the entrance to Jericho High School on Cedar Swamp Road.
PIX11 News observed officers removing what appeared to be a body bag and other items of evidence, just before sundown on Wednesday.
The Jericho location is in the larger jurisdiction of the Town of Oyster Bay. Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino's office confirmed to PIX11 News that a body was discovered.
Law enforcement sources have told PIX11 News that the presence of gang violence investigators from both federal and local law enforcement agencies is an indication that the discovery is part of an investigation into past gang-related crimes in the area. Sources indicate that MS-13 operatives are suspected in the case.
PIX11 News also confirmed that local law enforcement agencies and elected officials have been fielding calls all day from families of Jericho High School students, who are concerned about the discovery's proximity to the school.
