Abhay Deol says 'industry did not have much faith' in 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara'

Abhay Deol recently revealed in an interview that many within the Bollywood industry doubted the success of the film 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' because it lacked a traditional villain. Instead, the film focused on the internal conflicts of its characters, a concept that was met with scepticism. Despite this, the movie, directed by Zoya Akhtar, became one of the biggest hits of Deol's career.

In a recent interaction with BBC News Hindi, Abhay said, "When we were making Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, so many people in the film industry were asking ‘who is the villain? There is no villain. What is inner conflict? Who will come to watch Hrithik Roshan’s inner conflict?’ We were hearing this kind of chatter."

He credited the film's success to its unique approach and packaging. "That is how it was fresh. That these kinds of actors and making this kind of film and in this budget, and it worked. But the film industry did not have much faith that it would work,” he said.

Deol also discussed his film 'Manorama Six Feet Under', which had a limited release and marketing budget, leading to its poor performance at the box office. "Like 'Manorama Six Feet Under', if it has 60 screens and the marketing budget is Rs 25 lakh, people won’t even come to know that it has released and then obviously, theatrically it did not work. It worked well later on DVD but by then, the film was already in loss. And the industry said, ‘look, we told you that these kind of films don’t work’,” Abhay said.

He emphasised the importance of effective promotion to ensure that different types of cinema reach the audience. Deol's most recent appearance was in the Netflix series 'Trial By Fire', alongside Rajshri Deshpande. The web series was based on the book 'Trial by Fire: The Tragic Tale of the Uphaar Fire Tragedy' authored by Neelam Krishnamoorthy and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy.
