HYDERABAD: The
Election Commission of India
has decided to crack the whip on 26
candidates
— mostly independents and functionaries of
Bahujan Samaj Party
— who failed to submit their election expenditure account to the poll body during the last year’s Telangana assembly elections.
Telangana chief electoral officer Vikas Raj said they would be barred from contesting elections for three years after following the due procedure. Seven candidates submitted their expenditure accounts after the EC deadline.
Vikas Raj said 2,254 candidates who contested the November 2023 elections submitted their accounts in time and as per the prescribed proforma. At least two candidates did not furnish their expenses in the prescribed format.
Five candidates, who contested from Kamareddy, including BSP’s U Mahesh Goud, didn’t submit the election expenses account to the election commission.
The other constituencies where candidates had failed to submit their expenditure accounts were Nizamabad Urban, Jukkal, Husnabad, Siddipet, Warangal East, Parkal, Gajwel, Uppal, Narayanpet, Asifabad, Chennur and Palair.
Section 10-A of the Representation of the People Act says if EC is satisfied that a candidate failed to furnish an account of election expenses within the prescribed time limit and has no good reason or justification for the failure should be disqualified for three years.
EC will issue a notice to the candidate to show cause why he or she should not be disqualified under section 10-A of RPA for the failure to submit the expenses account.
The candidate has to reply to the Election Commission of India and the district election officer within 20 days of receiving the notice. The DEO will write remarks on it and send it to the commission.
Based on the DEO’s report, if the commission is satisfied that the candidate has no good reason or justification for the failure to submit his/her account, the candidate will be disqualified, an official said.
