2 blasts put Imphal on edge; student killed

IMPHAL: A college student was

killed

and another wounded as “unidentified miscreants” triggered a

bomb

explosion at DM University in

Imphal

around 9.30pm Friday night and later torched the office building of civil society organisation United Committee Manipur (UCM), a private school, and a house. The string of violence put Imphal valley on the edge. The deceased student, identified by police as 24-yearold Oinam Kenegy from Bishnupur district, died of his wounds at a private hospital in Imphal. Kenegy was a fifthsemester student at DM College of Science. The wounded student, Salam Micheal, 24, from the same district, is undergoing treatment.
Earlier, around 7pm, mis creants exploded a bomb near the private residence of Ch Opendro at Sagolband area in Imphal West. No injuries were reported.
Arson followed the bombings, but authorities have yet to ascribe a motive or identify the perpetrators. Police have registered different FIRs. Locals too have taken swift action in the wake of the student’s killing, establishing a joint action committee and convening a public meeting to address the violence.
Timely arrival of firefighters saved the UCM office, the school, and the house from complete destruction, police said Saturday. Describing the extent of damage, police reported the fire at the school damaged some classrooms, administrative block, and a vehicle parked there. More than 650 students are enrolled in it for the current academic year.
