1 seriously injured as gas main rupture causes evacuations in Bay Ridge

BAY RIDGE, Brooklyn (PIX11) – One person was seriously injured after a gas main ruptured in Brooklyn Thursday evening, authorities said.

It happened on 86th Street between Colonial Road and Ridge Boulevard in Bay Ridge around 5:45 p.m., according to the FDNY.

National Grid crews were performing scheduled repair work on a natural gas transmission main in the street when the incident occurred. A National Grid employee was injured and has been hospitalized.

All occupancies on 86th Street between Colonial Road and Ridge Boulevard have been evacuated, authorities said.

“Safety remains our top priority, and our National Grid crews are currently working in collaboration with emergency responders and city agencies at the scene. Valves at either end of the affected section of the main have been closed,” a National Grid spokesperson said.
